This is a group of vigorous small-flowered varieties, with their earliest parent being the Chinese native species Clematis montana (scientific name: Clematis montana Buch.-Ham. ex DC.). It is distributed in southern Xizang, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan in China, as well as regions ranging from the western Himalayas to Nepal and northern India. It typically grows on mountain slopes, valley thickets, forest edges, or along streams. Among clematis species, its cold hardiness ranks second only to the Atragene Group (Long-petaled Clematis).
